Chiropractic, Disease, Adjustments and Other Voodoo!
by R. J. Hammett, D.C.
Dr. Hammett is a chiropractor in private practice in Kenosha, Wisconsin. After graduating from Life College in 1979, he completed several post-graduate programs in Physical Impairments, Diagnostic Imaging and Rehabilitation. He completed his Juris Doctor in 1995. He has written articles for several Journals and has lectured to numerous Chiropractic groups on the topics of Practice Management and Risk Prevention.

It’s an interesting time we live in as Chiropractors. As third party coverage lessens, the odd solutions to maintaining our incomes become more apparent. We’ve become what we chastised in the sixties and seventies. We laughed at the medical profession for prescribing new drugs, performing new tests and giving out treatments until the insurance stopped paying, then mysteriously those “needed” treatments were no longer valid or effective and stopped being used.
Chiropractors are doing the same. The journals are ever increasing with articles and equipment ads that the third parties will pay for. The journals and advertisements are getting thick with disc regeneration machines, and nutritional programs for patients, instrument adjustments, and every gimmick you can think of to provide the average Chiropractors ever decreasing patient volume more per patient dollar billings. The basics of Chiropractic are still around, somewhere. But every year they become more buried in the business of Chiropractic, instead of the practice of Chiropractic.
It became about the right notes, the right reports, the right scientific evidence, the right rehabs, and ad nauseum. Many journals have a multi-focal approach in treating diseases. First the right diagnosis, then the right vitamin mixture, then the right rehab, then the right physical therapy, then the correct auto suggestion during treatment; is it any wonder that the public hasn’t a clue what chiropractic is and what to expect at any particular office visit.
Yes, Ladies and Gentlemen, B.J. Palmer’s worse concern has come to pass — we are more like the M.D.’s than the M.D.’s are like themselves. We diagnose, we prescribe, we treat, we prognosis, my, we’re like “real doctors”! I just bet you feel more respectable today than the Chiropractors of yesterday. I bet you feel proud that you’re in an alternative healing profession. I bet you’re just tickled pink that your results in correcting nerve interference is at best compared to a good massage. You’ve done your fore fathers of Chiropractic true justice.
For the sake of gold, you’ve sold your public trust in correction of the cause and prevention of dis-ease. But I’ll bet you’re a good little symptom chaser, a great vitamin salesman, I bet your hot with that new disc decompression machine! And, those ICD’s and CPT codes, I’ll bet you know the top twenty by heart.
But, I have a very important question for you. Can you find, correct and know that you’ve corrected “the vertebral subluxation complex?” Irregardless of the disease presented and the millions of “ologies” you think are necessary to practice. Have you corrected what no one else can? Have you detected, analyzed, confirmed, the corrected the essence of D.D. Palmer’s Chiropractic? Have you performed what the smartest physical therapist, medical doctor or massage therapist hasn’t a clue about finding? Can you prove to yourself and your patient that you have the cause of dis-ease under control? You want a huge practice? You want to earn all the money you can? Follow, study and apply the science, art and philosophy of Chiropractic.
Is there anything else? If there is, it’s probably not Chiropractic....
Till next time........
