Dr. Reid Writes Text for Japanese Chiropractors
Dr.
Reid has now been in Japan for three years.
He is teaching at Hands Chiropractic College and Working with the
Japan Chiropractic Association teaching at their seminars around the
country. He lives in Tokyo.
In
talking with Dr. Reid, he says that currently there are no laws and
rules with regards to chiropractic.
The most recent legislation was in 1964.
The Japanese Supreme Court made the decision that “If there is
no clear harm to a treatment, it shall not be subjected to legal
proscription.” This has allowed for a tremendous proliferation of
chiropractors, at present an estimated 15,000.
Although this is good for expansion of chiropractic, it has been
without educational, or agreeable standards.
Dr.
Reid states, “It is hard to tell what a chiropractor is sometimes.
They put a sign out saying they are chiropractors, advertise they
can fix the patients posture, and fix conditions such as scoliosis,
cancer, and other ailments, but they don’t know what a subluxation is.
Their intentions are good,
but unfortunately, there are only about 50 or so America graduated
chiropractors, and without regulations, institutes and organizations are
everywhere claiming they are the real chiropractic, and the rest are
bogus.
Currently,
chiropractic in Japan is about ten to fifteen years behind American
standards. This means that
techniques such as SOT, Thompson, and Applied Kinesiology are the
popular methods of care. Looking
back at the early 80’s in America, we see the same thing.
Many methods at that time were without scientific foundation, and
simply practiced because it was popular, or the seminar instructor was
respected.
In
Japan at this time, Dr. Reid is the only American Chiropractor that
speaks both Japanese and English, and is in the business of teaching.
Seeing the need to update the standards of chiropractic in Japan,
and at the request of the president of the Japan Chiropractic
Association (Iwama Yasunori), Dr. Reid wrote three books on
chiropractic. The books are
entitled; 1) Chiropractic theory, facts and myths, 2) Extremity
Adjusting, and 3) Spinal adjusting and Spinal Correction.
In
his book Chiropractic theory, facts and myths, he references some 150
research articles dispelling myths such as the reliability in leg length
checks, motion palpation, segmental subluxation, and movement of the
sacro-iliac joint. He
confides that the majority of his references were noted (found) in
articles in the American Journal of Clinical Chiropractic.
After
demonstrating CBP® to President Iwama, it was decided a concise and
easily understood section of his book on spinal adjusting should be
dedicated to such. Chiropractors
in Japan are unable to perform x-rays due to lack of licensing,
therefore, Dr. Reid explains, in detail, the posture analysis and
methods of photographing the spine that allow for computerized
measurements of global subluxation.
Dr.
Reid states, “Chiropractors in Japan are still under the illusion that
by popping the joints they can correct scoliosis.
I am hoping that once they read the book on spinal correction
they will see it requires slow traction of the ligaments, postural
training, and mirror-image adjusting, not just popping the C7-PRS back
into place.”
Dr.
Reid spends the majority of his time teaching for the JCA.
It has some 3000 members, and currently is the only group getting
information based on research, and techniques that are current.
President Iwama comments that he is fortunate to have the only
Japanese and English speaking American chiropractor in Japan as part of
their organization.
The
books are set for publication by Ido-Nihon Shuppansha this fall.
This is especially important because this publishing company is
oriented toward medical doctors, and does not publish chiropractic books
at large. Dr. Reid
laughingly comments if you would like to order a copy of the books, he
would be happy to help you, but don’t ask for him to explain the
contents. It is all in
Japanese!
